The Eagle (1925)

Rudolph Valentino, Vilma Bánky
Clarence Brown
Rudolph Valentino becomes a masked vigilante in this moving melodrama from the pinnacle of the silent era. He plays Vladimir Dubrovsky, a lieutenant in the Russian army whose father loses his land to the diabolical Kyrilla Troekouroff. Dubrovsky goes undercover to seek revenge, but finds his plans foiled when he falls in love with Troekouroff's daughter (Vilma Banky). With Oscar-nominated Louise Dresser (A Ship Comes In) rounding out the cast, director Clarence Brown (Anna Karenina) takes a story by Russian novelist Alexander Pushkin and creates a movie that soars to almost Shakespearean heights.
