The Joyless Street (1925)

Post WWI Vienna is in economic ruin, and the citizens are struggling with the harsh conditions. Lila Leid (Tamara Geva) is murdered, leaving her husband’s secretary, Egon (Henry Stuart) a suspect. Also struggling is former government official, Hofrat Rumfort (Jaro Fürth), who is living in poverty. To get by, Rumfort’s daughter, Greta (Greta Garbo), earns money working at a brothel. Directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst (“Pandora’s Box” (1929), “Diary of a Lost Girl” (1929)), this intense German Drama puts you into the slums of depression era Austria, making you feel the sorrow that lives in the appropriately named “Joyless Street.” (BW)
